Ashur Adams family correspondence, 1800-1869; bulk: 1852-1855.

Collection consists primarily of letters sent by Ashur Adams of Boston and Roxbury, Mass. to his daughter Frances "Franny" Caroline Adams (later Chamberlain), 1852-55, while she was living with relatives in Maine; letters received by Ashur from his son George, 1838-51; and letters sent to Francis from various relatives following the death of her mother in 1854. Also includes papers of Gov. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain and family of Bangor, Me., including a letter sent by his mother, Sarah Barstow Chamberlain to her sister, ca. 1800, accounts and receipts, 1825-27, a medical report written by his father, Joshua Chamberlain, 1833; and a few documents from Joshua's tenure as Gov. of Maine, 1869.

Chamberlain was born in Brewer, Maine, the son of Sarah Dupee (née Brastow) and Joshua Chamberlain, on September 8, 1828.
